This is story of Maria, a year-old Puerto Rican who grew up on the island with her mom and now moved to the New York barrio to be with her dad.

I felt that the author did a great job of exploring the conflict Maria feels through Maria’s own poems and writings. Through the letters and encouragement from her teachers, Maria explores her love and talent for writing.

As she struggles vall lose her island accent, Maria does her best to find her place within the unfamiliar culture of the barrio.
