The Speed book was written at the turn of the century, so the language can seem a little difficult to modern ears. I was studying classical drawing, and this book is recommended as a way ddawing get practice using exercises from the French Academy. If you just love drawing and have money to burn, you should buy it. Bargue also had the knack of simplifying his forms in order to make them clearer and easier to copy for the aspiring student. For those who are interested in classical drawing, this book is a must.
Many of the lessons found in examining and replicating these plates are used by contemporary artists in their work. Thank you for the review. The course was one of the first drawing curricula ever created for the equivalent of high school students to improve their draftsmanship and visual literacy.

To understand it properly, some understanding of how academic art was taught in the late 19th century, when it was published, will help. I do believe that this wilful abandonment of the traditions of the past has given rise to a growing representational baggue which has a strong drqwing to hark back to the late 19th century.
According to the introduction of this publication, there were a few competitors on the market at the time, but the Bargue course had something extra going for it. Bargue did some wonderful paintings, good choice!

Bargue was a superb draughtsman, it fairly drips off the pages, with plate after plate of beautifully realised drawings. The reading of the material is fast, but now the fun begins as I go back to replicate the drawings. This stuff is hard, and takes years to learn. Which is good for beginner?

I have started one copy in a size just a little larger than in the book, but will get larger copies made.
There are no discussion topics on this book charkes. It starts off with teaching the ability to judge lines and proportions, then moves onto cast studies, and finally the copying of dawing. If you want to study figurative drawing, look up Bargue drawings on YouTube to see what sight-size technique cuarles about, then google for the print-resolution downloadable pdf of the images, and then barrgue the book and get started.

Old style academic ateliers are springing up all over the place, and the pendulum is swinging back the other way, at least in some quarters. I will definitely do that, but not as big as 18x The book does not however work if you purchase it to collect dust. The Bargue course is the one that Vincent Van Gogh worked his way through twice on his own.

I do think it would have been nice for the authors or publisher to at least offer a full size version of the lithos in pdf form. Really is a challenge but as an artist all drawkng my life, it is a wonderful challenge, your crit was fair, anmd I do agree about the pages would have been better loose for this prupose.
Maybe you DID update the review I dunno. It managed to straddle the two main camps in academic art at the time, one of idealisation of nature along the lines of Raphael, what you might call classicism, the other a part of the growing realist movement which held that art should be honest, including being truthfully ugly if the subject was ugly. I have just started using this course after drawing and painting most of my life, and feel that it will be very beneficial.
