When Lord Peter Wimsey visits the college – as much to see Harriet as for anything else – he agrees to assist in the sayees. I think Gaudy is the first book I dorothhy picked to pieces, analyzing as far down as my then-teen-aged mind could go without hitting bottom. Wodehouse while describing love-struck youths behaving like imbeciles.

My advisors and professors, knowing I had an affinity for reading and writing mystery stories, encouraged me to do an independent study on this era of literature; but they also to Book Review 4 of 5 stars to Gaudy Night by Dorothy L.

She is only attending because a classmate of hers is very ill and is attending the Gaudy before going overseas for surgery. The discussions cover the gamut from literary topics to history to philosophy and science. The coming together of Harriet and Peter is all well and good, but the real business of a love story is the marriage that follows, and how it works out. It’s a powerfully nostalgic version of university life, especially for someone currently struggling to get any help with a PhD proposal — oh for Shrewsbury College and the community there!


My mother, whose educational ambitions were thwarted by family circumstances and the war, adored this book, and with her encouragement I read it first when I was a teenager. Wimsey is at his most appealing here, and I’d put his conversation at the end with Harriet high up in my personal list of favorite literary romantic scenes–all the more for how it fits the themes throughout the novel.

Gaudy Night by Dorothy L Sayers – a weighty novel that still thrills

Harriet, herself a victim of poison-pen letters since her trial, reluctantly agrees to nighy, and spends much of the next few months in residence at the college, ostensibly to do research on Sheridan Le Fanu and to assist a don with her book.

Despite it being in the middle of a series, doroty I severely dislike, I read it without enjoying the prior installments. But overall, I answer with Harriet: But across a timespan of 15 years, the heroine is allowed little more than the occasional chaste peck on the cheek; for the decade or so after the end of the war the only release outlet for her emotional energy was through occasional visits to her irreversibly shell-shocked sweetheart mercifully killed off in the fourth or fifth book.

It takes a couple pages just to get all the characters well defined. Female scholars without fine minds and eayers are not fine clothes horses are definitely depicted as lesser in this book.

But, would we have expected the same of scholars and masters at Balliol? Consider Jacqueline Winspear, creator of ssayers delightful Maisie Dobbs series. This is the second mystery that Harriet and Peter investigate ‘together’ — and by together I mean that Harriet spends quite gauy time collecting facts, and Peter does all the analysis and deduction.


View all 3 comments. View the Lesson Plans. There was a feminist theme evident in Have His Carcasebut I’d say the entire theme of men, women and their relations is even more to the fore in Gaudy Night and I loved the way Sayers played with that.

Over a year ago now, Lord Peter pretty much saved my life. During the course of the investigation, Harriet finally admits her feelings for Peter, and the story ends in a highly satisfying manner with the lovers locked in the traditional kiss. Oh woe is me Lisa.

Meanwhile, we leave you with this post. She also uses both Harriet a fictional writer of detective stories and Lord Peter a fictional detective to playfully send up the crime fiction genre. Did she use a calendar? But its different strands are cleverly interwoven and the result transcends genre; it is a much more sophisticated work than Sayers’ straight detective novels.
