Frankly, I’m shocked an editor didn’t clean this up more. Given the situation there should have been way more drama. The book tells the story of an airline pilot who has to lead his passengers to safety after a nuclear war breaks out during their transatlantic flight. It may be because this was during the time that Neutron bombs were being discussed and I got this to read for a flight I was on. My friend Joe, another prolific reader, suggested some great older novels to read and David Graham was on the list.

And who did for the kid’s?? The first third of the book details the bad conditions u The start of the story focuses on a world where the US is in real financial trouble due to depleted oil reserves.
This might be the 4th time I have read this book and it is as it ever was. This happens while our protagonist Jonah Sunlesw is in the air and the story is mostly taken up with his plane and later on a Russian plane trying to escape the nuclear fallout.
May 22, Michael rated it liked it. Even keeping in mind the general machismo of airline grahamm, the sexism seems over-the-top for something put out in a post-feminism decade, and the bigotry, while subtle, is readily apparent in this politically correct day and age.

Worth a read, especially if this is your genre. To place the story on an airliner mid-Atlantic however was genius. This book made me cry in two different spots. Soon after the characters arrive at McMurdo, it is realised that the tilt of the Earth on its axis is being affected by the numerous nuclear explosions.
And it is a book I come back to every so often, it had that effect on me, and it is similar in that to Nevil Shute’s “On the Beach” genre: All that have borrowed this book over the years have said they would like to read again. Couldn’t Ben have slipped and missed the plane on the final refuel leaving him stranded etc etc?? And once you land, then what? But ssunless in the air, nuclear war broke out, and Scott became responsible for the entire human race!
An exciting and totally plausible, contemporary story of what could have happened then If you cannot return to your origin and your destination is now radioactively hot – your options are severely limited to the amount of fuel remaining in the tank. Langford, who was killed in the strike and replaced by an acting President, James McCracken.
