It may be the abridged version that is more responsible, but I am pretty sure that the whole book would have been even more of a drag.

Let me begin by saying that I didn’t read this in the solddao Czech but in translation while I was living thereand the book seemed horribly flat to me. Please change cover 7 38 Dec 29, Some of the stories ben amusing, but Hasek is no Dickens.

Much of this book consists of the main character, the standard vaudevillian “lovable oaf with a heart of gold”, wandering around the countryside thinking not-terribly-interesting thoughts. Just a moment while we sign you in to lad Goodreads account. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. Apparently an enigma – is he an idiot or cannily playing the part to survive?

I wanted to read it, because it was recommended by teachers on W. Other books in the series. You can crawl naked on the floor, howl like a jackal, rage and bite.

He was a journalist, bohemian, and practical joker. I enjoyed what I read, but never I had recently done some reading around WW1 topics, so when I saw this on the shelves I thought it would be a good time to get around to this.

The big difference here is that 1 there’s no shift from fast witty one-liners and to serious plot stuff at the end and 2 the fast witty one-liners are not fast or one-liners.

The main character could not hook me by his traits or lack of thereof. I loved the idea of this novel but not the page reality of it.

At some point, I realized it was just going to continue in the same vein, and I wasn’t bothering to form any new impressions, so I put aside for now.
