It makes me acutely aware of how badly English needs a standard longyezr non-gendered pronoun, because after finishing this book, you eneny want to call Jeribah Shigan an “it”. The story starts out great and has many great chapters that revolve around Davidge and Jerry or Davidge and Zammis as they are stranded on the planet. Mind those who like this genre? Enemy Mine by Barry Longyear. When a group read came up, I pulled it off the shelves, but decided to read the short story instead. This book answered the question: After Davidge is shot and left for dead, the book and movie take completely different directions.

But when tragedy strikes, a whole new set of problems must be solved. This style of ending was popular for a while in the 60s and 70s, although it was basically just a rather heavy-handed way of underscoring the horrors of war. But where Longyear falls a little short is in style. The Irkmaan and the Drac are stranded on a planet alien to them both, but they forge a friendship trusty enough that Davidge the human is entrusted with the care of his friend’s child.

Teens and even tweens would probably appreciate it, too.
